How Can Positive Affirmations Help You?

When I moved from Texas to New York many years ago, one of the things I noticed about people there was how they responded to the question “How are you?”

The typical response in New York was “Not bad”.

In Texas I was accustomed to getting the response “Fine.”

What strikes you most about the difference in those responses?

Did you notice that in the first example, the focus is on negative words, and in the second example, the response is a positive word?

Do you know what Mother Teresa said regarding an invitation to an anti-war demonstration?

She said she would not attend an anti-war demonstration, but that if you invited her to a peace rally, she would go.

So, what does that illustrate?

It shows that Mother Teresa focused on the positive. She would not go to an event that was against something negative, but she would go to an event for something positive.

Her answer is in line with the Laws of Attraction… What you think or talk about comes to you. You attract what you focus on.

How can you apply that to yourself?

Why not create some positive affirmations to answer the questions that follow?

I wrote some example answers to give you a head start, but you should give an answer that most speaks from your heart’s desire. What do you want to attract? Beginning your affirmations with “I am” is very powerful.

How would you like your health to be?

I am healthy and full of energy.  (Not:  I am free of pain. Don’t mention pain or other things you don’t want!)

What about your wealth?  What would you like to be earning?

I am earning net profits of_____________per month.

How would you like your emotional state to be?

I am happy and serene. (not: I am anxiety-free)

Now consider these lyrics I wrote for the song, ’The Gift of the Present’:

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

May I always be thankful
for the gift given to me
every moment of my life,
every breath I breathe.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

What are you thankful for?

I am thankful that I have arms and legs. I am thankful that I am loved.

Who are you appreciating? (family, friends, teachers, spiritual guides, divine beings)

I am appreciating___________.

What kind of attitude do you want to have?

I am appreciating what life teaches me.

I am important. I make a difference in other people’s lives.

OK. That should be enough to get you started.

What other positive affirmations
can you come up with? Why not help others by sharing them in the comments below this post?

Hi Bob, I like what you said “What we speak or how we respond speaks a lot about our inner self.” Thank you for sharing your insight.

Mother Teresa was a living saint so its always soul enriching to reflect on her words and deeds. What we speak or how we respond speaks a lot about our inner self. If we want positivity to become a part of our lives, as you say Joyce, we should speak and act positively.

Focus on the positive. Mother Teresa showed us how to respond positively to the same situation.

“It’s not what happens to you but how you perceive it that determines how you will deal with the situation.”

Perception is the key.

Thanks for sharing, Joyce.

Thank you for this comment about how music helps us! It’s inspiring me to get moving on recording my inspirational songs!

It’s during seemingly unbeatable odds that we can turn to music as a source of motivation. A song we like and relate to can help us cope with our struggles, taking on value far beyond something on the radio that just helps us pass the time. Immersing our thoughts and troubles into our favorite songs for even a brief period can inspire us beyond the moment of what is and where we are, to where we can be because of who we are. Music can help us cope with our struggles, taking on value far beyond something on the radio that just helps us pass the time.

Zany movies that make you laugh are a great way to get happy! Thanks for sharing about the film “Cats and Dogs”.

Some of you out there have seen the zany film, “Cats and Dogs.” It is perfect for a lot of laughs over stylized antics in the classic war of “cat vs dog” if you are in the mood for something completely silly and off the wall.

Focusing on the positives instead of the negatives is very important to leading a healthy and successful lifestyle. The glass is always half full this way.

Wow, that is strange how I didn’t recognize it. I currently moved to New York from Texas as well. It is strange how something so simple can mean so much. Reminds me of the glass is half full/half empty topic.
